"The mission of Wisconsin Naval Ship Association, Inc. (WINSA) is to preserve the Navy destroyer, the USS Edson (DD-946), and to bring her to Sheboygan, Wisconsin for future generations to enjoy. She will serve as a naval museum and educate young Americans, as well as being a tourist attraction and splendid memorial for all veterans. The ship will also be available for use as a Disaster Recovery Command Post and/or emergency shelter during natural disasters or terrorist attacks."

Negotiations have been held with the City of Sheboygan and on 18 December 2006 the Sheboygan Common Council approved a contingent lease between the city and WINSA. The lease has been signed and it is a done deal. The USS Edson now has a future berthing site in Sheboygan. When the USS Edson arrives in Sheboygan, it will be the second Hull Class Destroyer preserved as a museum ship and the only one displayed in the Midwest.

The Hull Class is a sub class of the Forrest Sherman class destroyers. The main differences are a higher modified hurricane bow and a new automatic boiler combustion control system.
