In my experience of posting messages at Looney Tunes message boards, Gossamer seems to be the most asked about minor character.  Gossamer was created by Chuck Jones in 1946 for the hilarious cartoon: "Hair Raising Hare" (featuring Bugs Bunny).  He only appeared in three complete cartoons in his career, and he was not named until the third ("Duck Dodgers").  In  his second cartoon, "Water, Water, Every Hare", he was christened "Rudolph" and was the pet of a mad scientist (BOO!). He rarely speaks, is somewhat intelligent, and according to his last cartoon, "Duck Dodgers in The Return of The 24 1/2 Century", he is found to just be a solid mass of hair, even though this fact is contradicted by the cartoon "Water, Water, Every Hare", in which Gossamer is shown to have a scalp.  Gossamer also wears sneakers, just like Marvin the Martian.  This proves that monsters and aliens obviously shop at the same shoe store.  Gossamer is a sucker for a good makeover, he enjoys manicures and salons.

A Peter Lorre scientist needs to feed his monster, so he sends a sexy rabbit robot to lure Bugs to his castle.  When Bugs meets the monster a hilarious chase ensues.

Comments:  This is, in my opinion, the funniest Gossamer cartoon out of the whole series.  It has the classic scene with Bugs Bunny pretending to be a beauty shop manicurist and having Gossamer dip his patties in the water.

"Water, Water Every Hare" Looney Tune(1952)
Directed by Charles M. Jones

Layouts by Robert Gribbroek

Due to pauring rain, Bugs Bunny is floating along on his matress as he sleeps.  Then a mad scientist, in need of a brain for his mechanical monster, spots Bugs and reels him in.  When Bugs runs away, the scientist makes Rudloph go and get him.

Comments: This is pretty much an extention or remake of "Hair Rasing Hare".  It uses the manicurist gag, only this time it has Bugs pretending to be a hairgresser and telling Gossamer how INteresting some people are.  Also note that Gossamer is named Rudolph for this cartoon.  It is a common misconception that the voice of the mad scientist is Vincent Price himself, however it is really just a very good imitation.

"Duck Dodgers and the Return to The 24th 1/2 Century" Merrie Melodie(1980)
Produced and Directed by Chuck Jones
Written and Directed by Michael Maltese and Chuck Jones
Production Designed by Maurice Noble and Ron Dias
Master Animators: Phil Monroe, Manny Perez, Irv Andersen, Ben Washam, and Lloyd Vaughan
Key Assistant: Retta Davidson
Graphics by Don Foster
Voice Characterizations by Mel Blanc
Musical Direction by Dean Elliot

Daffy Duck once again reprises his role as "Duck Dodgers", only this time he has to protect the "Rack and Pinion Molecule", the only substance that can polish yo-yos.  When Daffy discoveres that Marvin the Martian wants to blow up the Earth, he tries to stop the alien.  This causes Marvin to sic Gossamer on him.

Comments: This is the cartoon that officially named the hairy monster Gossamer.  It is also the cartoon that shows us Gossamer is only hair and sneakers.  This cartoon has bad puns abound.  This cartoon is also edited when shown on Cartoon Network, you can see it uncut on "Daffy Duck's Thaks for Giving" TV special

Other Appearances:
"Daffy Duck's Quackbusters"
"Space Jam"
