Here is a handout to readers of the Language exams in 2004. The advice will help you understand the point of view of AP toward student essays.

Scoring Worksheet for AP Exam

This stats sheet is good enough to figure a student's score on ANY AP exam, including the 1982 one. Teachers can have students practice any complete multiple choice section (even from AP workbooks) and any three essay questions to let students see where they would score on an AP exam. At latest, this work sheet should be given to students early in the years in which they will take their Language or Literature exam. Younger students should at least be aware of this Scoring Worksheet. They will see that receiving 66% of the multiple choice correct and writing three 6"s on their essays will garner them a 4 on the exam. 3 and up is considered success.

Rubrics

Sequence Rubrics

Remember rubrics score, they do not grade.

1.Here is a book to buy called 5 Steps to a 5 on the AP: Writing the AP English Essay (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series)  Link to book site.

For the OGHS AP English Literature Class, the teacher has created three Nine Point Trait Rubrics for all three literature questions with a conversion to a percentage grade. This really is a helpful and free scoring guide, but I would not make 8's and 9's the only A's. Link to site
