My Space Shuttle Restoration
Am I crazy!
It looks bad here. What you don't see is that while cleaning off years of dirt and over waxing, large and very small pieces of paint flaked off. The result was me having to make a decision to just call it a loss and part it out or go ahead with an almost total repaint of the playfield. Well, my philosophy is never part out if the game is saveable. I decided to try to save it and what followed would take me to the edge of my talents in playfield restoration.
Roll Over and Pop area repainted by hand. By the time I'm done I will have repainted over 90% of this playfield.
Half the upper black is done. What a difference!
Starting to do the lined areas
My Invention. I call it a "Reverse Stencil"
Oh my, Learning Curve
Much Better
After several tries this part's done
It took me two months to get this far
I'm close to being done here. All the blue, black and most of the areas around all inserts have been repainted over the whole playfield. All I have to do is add the star field and fix the numbers above the bonus inserts.
You'll notice that the center area where the Space Shuttle Arm Patch should be is painted black. I'll be installing a decal over this area after the clearcoat has been applied. Jeff McAfee of Classic Arcades used his talents and reproduced a beautiful decal from a scan I sent him.
Bonus inserts have been hand painted but I don't have the talent to paint the numbered areas and make it look good. I'll make decals in Photoshop, print them onto vary thin vinyl adhesive photo media and apply after the clearcoat is applied. Then I'll cover the area with playfield Mylar.
After I've worked on the numbered areas in Photoshop.
Here I am hard at it. At this point all I want to do is just "Get-R-Done"! However it is a "Labor of Love".
Actually I'm restoring two Space Shuttles at the same time. The other was just as bad but only around the pops and the bonus area above the flippers. Here they are side by side.
Man, that clearcoat really shines!
Here's the playfield you've been following the restoration on in the above pictures. Does it look any better then when I first started?
Next I need to get the bonus and arm patch decals installed. Then I need to decide how far to restore the cabinet. The reds are faded but the rest is solid and in good condition. I was hoping to find someone close that had a nice cabinet they wanted to get ride of with good solid reds. I'm tempted to leave this as is and put it all back together.
