- Lake Michigan Shoreline Birds, Port Washington to Door
County
- Report by Noel Cutright as posted on Wis Bird Net:
Eight hearty souls braved the frigid weather on Saturday to search for
Gray Partridge, field birds, and gulls. After a rousing breakfast at
Harry's in Port Washington, we were able to view almost 1,500 Canada
Geese in the steam-filled harbor along with a few ducks of 5 species.
We then decided to drive directly to the town of Glenmore (DeLorme page
56, west of Denmark) to search the open fields for partridge. After
using 16 eyes in 4 vehicles for many hours, we came up empty-handed. We
did find 2 different Snowy Owls on Shirley Road on either side of
Glenmore Road, plus some Horned Larks, a few Snow Buntings, and a
couple
of Lapland Longspurs.
Along Hill Road in the Besadny (Kewaunee) Fish and Wildlife Area
(DeLorme page 56, near Ryans Corner), Seth Cutright spied a Hermit
Thrush, and everyone was able to view it from the warmth of their cars.
Nothing special in Kewaunee Harbor.
South of Kewaunee on Highway 42 (north of County J), Tom Uttech and
Seth
(in different cars) spotted a Merlin in a tree in the front yard of a
farmhouse, and we were able to obtain amazingly close views of the
raptor.
Two Rivers river/harbor held 2 Glaucous Gulls and 6 Great Black-backed
Gulls.
In Manitowoc's river/harbor some spotted a flying Thayer's Gull.
Sleeping on the ice on river in Sheboygan was an Iceland Gull, and more
GB-bG were seen flying.

Trip, Lake
Michigan from Milwaukee to Port Washington
- ... The day started with between 45 and 50
birders
at South Shore Yacht club around 8:00 am. Very slow there, so we made
our way north to McKinley Marina. Still not much, in fact Milwaukee in
general was rather slow. ... a Great Tit at Lake Park.... From there we
headed north to Port Washington, again rather slow, but we did get a
Greater Black-backed Gull and a Peregrin was seen near McDonald's.
- On to Harrington
Beach the group went. At
the end of CTH D ... we observed two Red-throated Loons. Along with the
loons we also had Black and White-winged Scoters, several Long-tailed
Ducks, and a Horned Grebe. At this point the group had thinned to about
a dozen or so. We headed north to Sheboygan, where we added another GBB
Gull along with a very cooperative 2nd year Glaucous Gull. I did have
one fly-by Common Loon. The group finally broke up around 1:45.
- Although the day
started rather slow, we
ended up with around 53 species. That included 18 waterfowl and 4 Gull
species. The migrants were somewhat scarce, although I did have a
couple large flocks of Blackbirds moving later in the day in Sheboygan.

Trip, Mead
Wildlife Area kentsue@charter.net
- The annual WSO field trip to the Mead SWA was a smashing
success. A total of 60 persons met at the Mead on a cold Saturday
morning (20s) but with only a light nw wind. The entire morning was
crystal clear ... 73 species of birds, average for a Mead field
trip.
We recorded Tundra Swans, 14 species of
ducks, 6 species of birds of prey (Rough-leg but no Osprey), Gr.
Prairie-Chicken, 6 species of woodpeckers (including numerous
sapsuckers), ravens, Brown Creeper, Winter Wren, both kinglets, Hermit
Thrush, first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the season and 5 species of
blackbirds (including several Rusties).
Perhaps the most unique experience was
birding along the Little Eau Pleine River off of Rangeline Rd. In that
area we saw a combination of Tundra Swans, Rusties, Brown Creepers
(3-5), Winter Wrens (2-4), Hermit Thrush and several species of
woodpeckers.
After 3 1/2 hours of
bird-watching, we returned to the Stanton W. Mead Education &
Visitor Center where people were able to make up for their loss of
calories from the cold weather and to warm the tissues with hot coffee
and cider. I gave a short presentation on the "greeness" of the center
and highlighted the 5 major alternate energy technologies associated
with the building.
People attended from many areas of the
state. I met people from Eau Claire, 3 from the River Edge Bird Club
near Milwaukee and Kay even dropped in from Douglas County (we were
pleased that she reached 150 for her Marathon County list on this trip).
Another highlight of the trip was the
unveiling of the new Mead Checklist to Birds. This checklist was
prepared by Dan Belter and funded by the Friends of Mead-McMillan
Association, Inc. Both Dan Belter and Gerry Janz helped me coordinate
this field trip.

- Fri May 12: 6AM - 2PM. To say the weather was
terrible would be
an understatement!!! It was cold (37 - 41 degrees for the time period),
windy and wet. It only did not rain for about 15 minutes while we were
walking a part of the auto tour. Despite this and really having to
fight to find birds, the birders were a great group!! Highlights
included a Rough-legged Hawk and an Olive-sided Flycatcher. We had 6
shorebird species (I found 2 more while scouting for tomorrow), 11
warbler species, etc. etc. Total for the 8 hours was 97 species. The
shorebird spot on the auto tour is now a big pond--no habitat. There is
water standing in farm fields but little had attracted shorebirds
today. It will be interesting to see how the field trips turn out
on
the next three days.

- Along the way the trip attracted as many as 23 birders, with
participants hailing from as far as Mukwonago, Milwaukee, Oshkosh,
Madison, Neenah, West Bend, Bayside and Fredonia. Quite a site with all
those scopes and binocular trained on the marsh as milk trucks and
semis zipped by at 60-70 mph.
- Side note: the signboards urging people
to slow down at each end of the marsh have tallied 271 victims so far
this
season; we found a 272nd victim on our way off the marsh: a still-very
warm adult Least Bittern, whose loss we mourned and stunning coloration
we admired before affording it a water burial.
- Other happier trip highlights:
-- Good long looks (not just a heard-bird) at an adult King Rail and a
juvenile who already was larger than a Virginia (south of Hwy 49 and
just west of pumphouse);
-- Large numbers of juvenile Black and Forster's Terns;
-- Scores of other juveniles, ranging from large fuzzy brown-headed
American White Pelicans to dainty stripy-headed Pied- billed Grebes
riding their mother's back and 2 (juvenile) Red-necked Grebes (on north
side of Hwy 49);
-- 11 shorebird species, including nearly 100 Short-billed Dowitchers
and at least 3 Stilt Sandpipers.
-- Some 300 Great Egrets feeding in the pool south of 49, along with
many pelicans.
-- And by keeping our eyes and ears open, a total list for the days of
87 species; a fine July day all in all.

Marsh,
starting at northern edge, on Hwy 49
- ... perfect weather conditions -- sunny and mild, with little
wind.... By 8:30, about 25 vehicles were lined up along the shoulder,
and dozens of scopes were set up and manned. The main focus of
attention was a large mudflat on the south side of the road (to the
west of the pumphouse) where hundreds of shorebirds were gathered to
feed ...
- Shorebird identification ... can be rather overwhelming for
beginning birders, or those with only infrequent opportunities for
observing shorebirds. Of course, one of the great things about
birders gathering in groups (such as on WSO field trips), is that
people of all skill levels are available and willing to offer tips and
assistance. ...
- Although the diversity of species may have been somewhat
reduced from what had been here a week or two ago, we still had a nice
selection to view. There were several Semipalmated and Black-bellied
Plovers present, and possibly a couple of Am. Goldens -- although those
were too distant to be certain.
- Both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs were in view, occasionally
providing great side-by-side comparisons. There were good numbers
of Stilt Sandpipers (possibly as many as 50), and also some
Short-billed Dowitchers -- including some a very close range.
Least, Pectoral and Semipalmated Sandpipers were scattered around on
the mud, providing us with good opportunites for distinguishing the
differences.
- Also seen in the area were Northern Harriers, Great Egrets,
Double-crested Cormorants and Ring-billed Gulls. Black-crowned
Night-Herons and White Pelicans flew by several times, and at least
three Least Bitterns provided great looks in the cattails on the north
side of the road.
- A King Rail was also heard giving its harsh calls from time to
time, and several family groups of Yellow-headed Blackbirds,
Pied-billed Grebes and coots were often in view.
- Later in the morning the group split up, with some going to the
Federal Headquarters to look for the Long-billed Dowitchers that had
recently been seen -- but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful in
finding any.
- The other portion of the group went through the refuge's auto
tour, where a number of passerines were observed. Several
American Redstarts were still in full song, and a few Tennessee
Warblers were seen, along with catbirds, Cedar Waxwings and other
species. Birds heard calling included Eastern Wood-Pewee, and
Red-eyed and Warbling Vireos. Song and Swamp Sparrows, Marsh
Wrens and Common Yellowthroats were also observed, among others.
A couple of dozen shorebirds were seen at a drying pond along the loop
road, including Least, Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers, and some Black
Terns were observed a little further down the road.
- The field trip wrapped up around 11:30 as participants started
heading for home in various directions. All in all, it was a
great day to be out at the marsh!

Trip, Green Bay Warblers
- The morning in Green Bay dawned partly cloudy, with cool
temperatures (50s) and a light to moderate east wind. About a
dozen birders gathered at the Ken Euers Nature Area parking lot at 8:00
AM, and we walked one of the trails (on the east side of the loop) for
about 45 minutes. We located a nice group of warblers that
included Tennessee, Nashville, No. Parula, Magnolias, Cape May,
Blackpoll, Bay-breasted, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green,
Black-and-white, Am. Redstart, and Wilson's. Several Red-eyed
Vireos and flickers were also seen, as well as a Northern Harrier and
Red-tailed and Cooper's Hawks. A Peregrine Falcon was spotted
carrying prey a little east of the Ken Euers area
- Around 9:00 we went over to Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary to
walk some of the roads and trails there, and we were joined by a few
more birders. One of the first birds we spotted was a Snowy
Egret, along with several Great Blues, Black-crowned Night-Herons and
Green Herons along the edges of the lagoons. Warblers were
present in scattered locations, but Ty and Ida Baumann told us that the
numbers of warblers were lower that they had been yesterday --
following the passage of the cold front on Friday. We saw many of
the same species we had seen at Ken Euers, but many more individuals.
Other species spotted included a Black-throated Blue (female), a Great
Crested Flycatcher, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, both nuthatches, a couple
of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Philadelphia Vireos, Blue-headed Vireos,
Swainson's Thrushes, and a few early juncos. Flying overhead at
various times were a Broad-winged Hawk, a Cooper's Hawk, a couple of
Bald Eagles, an Am. White Pelican, and lots of Tree Swallows. A
Spotted Sandpiper that was working the edge of one of the lagoons.
- At about noon we drove a few miles east to the Van Ess sod
farms, where we were hoping to find the Buff-breasted Sandpiper and Am.
Golden-Plover that were seen yesterday. Unfortunately all we
found were some Killdeer, crows and a Sandhill Crane. A machine
was cutting sod in the field at the time, so that may have had
something to do with not locating our target birds.
- Altogether, our group tallied about 72 species for the day,
including 16 warblers -- with some providing very good looks.
Thanks to Ty and Ida Baumann for helping lead this field trip.

Wisconsin Point
- We could have called it Jaegerfest 2006! We knew from the
observations during the days leading up to the weekend (including
Sabine's Gulls, Little Gulls, numerous jaegers of all three species,
one or two Arctic Terns, and a Lesser Black-backed Gull) that the
birding was likely to be active, and we weren't disappointed.
Some 40 birders (at times later on closer to 50) gathered at the first
beach area onWisconsin Point on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 23,
beginning around 7:00. The temperature was fairly mild (51
degrees), but there was a brisk wind blowing from the east (20-35 mph)
and nearly continuous drizzle or light rain falling (continuing all day
long). Despite the damp and miserable conditions, everyone was
excited and optimistic about seeing some great birds. Things
started a bit slowly, but then around 8:30 a dark jaeger was spotted
flying toward us from the west. It passed along the shoreline at
a distance of only about 100 meters, providing great views, and then
continued on to the east toward Gull Bluff. Because of its bulk,
its powerful direct flight, its lack of pointed central rectrices (they
were rounded and barely protruded beyond the rest of the tail), and
because a double "wing flash" had been observed on the underside of the
primaries/primary coverts, we concluded that this was a juvenile, dark
morph Pomarine Jaeger! We also had some good size comparisons
with various gulls that it chased. Just 20 minutes later we had
another nice fly-by observation, as a juvenile Sabine's Gull winged
past us, also heading to the east. Everyone had great looks at
the striking wing pattern, as well as the black bar at the end of the
tail.
Just after 9:00 we watched two Parasitic Jaegers with pale bellies come
flying in, although at a greater distance, and we watched them start
chasing gulls near Gull Bluff. They were joined by one or two
other jaegers (some in the group reported seeing five altogether!) and
we were entertained by numerous chases over the next 15 minutes,
although the distance, wind and rain made observation difficult.
At 9:17 a dark jaeger headed toward us from the east, but this one
passed us at a distance of at least 250 meters, so the identification
was uncertain. It might've been the same Pomarine, or perhaps a
similar dark Parasitic. At 9:40 a Peregrine Falcon provided good
looks as it came flying toward us from the west up the Point.
About 10:15 many in the group decided to head out to the Harbor
entrance (near the tip of the Point) and Tom Uttech reported spotting a
bird he felt was a juvenile Arctic Tern near the breakwater.
Unfortunately, the strong winds and rain made it difficult to view the
lake in an east or northeast direction from here, so shortly after
11:00 a number of birders decided to drive over to Gull Bluff.
Some scanned the lake from the protection of their vehicles (listening
to the Badger game), and others descended to view from the beach.
Several times over the next couple of hours we had great views of a
dark morph Parasitic as it flew in and harrassed gulls, and a couple of
times it passed nearly overhead at a very close distance! At
least one additional Parasitic was also spotted, and at one point in
the afternoon some birders from the group that were further west down
the beach spotted a jaeger that they identified as a Long-tailed!
Around 3:00 an adult light morph Parasitic Jaeger was reported over the
radios -- it was being seen sitting on the water in Allouez Bay.
Many of the remaining birders raced over there and were rewarded with
scope views of this bird over the next hour or more -- including
especially nice views of it in flight. Most of the time it was
sitting or swimming on the water, but at least 6-7 times it got up at
flew around, at times chasing gulls, but each time landing a little
closer to us. Around 4:20 it got up for the last time, and after
flying around for a while it gained elevation and headed off to the
west -- toward Duluth. We made one more stop at the harbor
entrance, where we were able to spot three more jaegers over the lake,
and then around 5:10 we called it a day and headed back to our motels.
The next morning (Sunday) birders began arriving earlier than the day
before (most between 6:30 and 7:00 AM). The rains had moved off,
the winds had died, and the skies were mostly clear -- and everyone was
filled with optimism for another great day. There was a nice
sunrise, and many eager eyes scanned the lake and shoreline as the
light slowly increased. Unfortunately, as the time passed, it starting
becoming evident that, besides the numerous Ring-billed and Herring
Gulls, there were few birds to be seen. A couple of Surf Scoters
and a Green-winged Teal were spotted (on the water, then flying) about
7:10, and a Peregrine came flying in shortly after 7:30, but aside from
a few other ducks, cormorants and Bonaparte's Gulls, there was little
of interest to be seen. Around 8:45 the group started splitting
up, with some heading out to the harbor entrance and lighthouse, and
others to Gull Bluff. The lighthouse birders reported seeing a
jaeger a little before 10:00, and about 10 minutes later one was
spotted from Gull Bluff -- a dark Parasitic that flew in, chased a
couple of gulls, and then landed on the lake. About 10 minutes
after that it took off, gained altitude until it was very high -- and
headed north toward Hawk Ridge. Eventually it was just a speck as
it headed west to Duluth and finally disappeared from view.
Around 11:00 AM, a number of us decided to call it a day and face the
long drive back home, but we were filled with lots of great memories
from our experiences. Altogether, about 80 species were observed
during the weekend (including Harris's Sparrows), and many agreed that
this may have been the best jaeger week in Wisconsin ever -- at least
in our experience! Thanks to Jeff Baughman for co-leading
this event and to everyone who participated.
I would welcome hearing addtional comments or observations from anyone
else, including those staying later on Sunday.
