Report of Duck Watch

Funny how this Duck Watch turned into a Warbler Walk at Sheridan Park
to see the Townsend's Warbler, and how the 10/7 Warbler Walk was partly
a Duck Watch:

For novice birders, I encourage you to take your binoculars to Lake
Park and study the Gadwall, Widgeons and Redhead which are all very
close to shore. So are some of the Buffleheads. The Fox
Sparrows were also very easy to see.
At Sheridan Park, the two Chimney Swifts made repeated flights over an
hour nearly at eye level just 20 to 50 meters off the top of the
bluff. Their all black color, cigar shaped bodies and long
pointed wings were unmistakeable.
The Magnolia Warbler I saw was 15-20 meters away from the top of the
bluff at Sheridan Park with excellent afternoon lighting behing me. Its
very bright yellow extended from throat, to the belly, all the way to
the undertail coverts, that I saw when it tipped up. The color
was very obvious compared to the couple dozen Yellow-rumped Warblers in
the area. The large white subterminal tailspots on both sides
were obvious a few times when it flew away from me. The sides of
the breast were heavily streaked with black. It had a faint
greenish shadow of the typical springtime black markings on the
face. The cap and nape were gray and graded into a greenish gray
on the shoulders. I hope that's enough documentation for this
late record sighting.
The Northern Harrier swooped northward some 60 meters off the bluff at
eye level. It's russet streaked breast and belly and bright white
rump were easy to see in the excellent light.
Overall nice consolations for not seeing the Townsend's. I guess
I will need to go out west to see them again.

Hope everyone had a good rest of the day birding. Here is a list
of what I saw this morning at Lake Park. I also flushed a small
bird (originally
thought it was a kinglet due to size, certainly a warbler) with a
bright yellow underside, but could not relocate it or get a clear
view. This was
in the rocks and trees along the lake by the soccer field.

Hi Paul,
This makes me wonder if the unidentified warbler that I flushed
Saturday morning along the soccer field lakefront rocks was the same
prairie warbler
that turned up yesterday at South Metro. The plain back and full
yellow below in a couple of the photos certainly look like what I
briefly saw.
Intriguing, but we'll never know. Wish I had gotten a better look
at it Saturday!
