A HOME RELAY STATION

Most of you will want to operate a home relay station. This is the heart of the APRS network system. All of our "little" stations out here listening and relaying information is what forms the APRS network. The point of the APRS network is to have enough RELAY stations throughout a given area, so that the mobile stations beaconing their GPS data are never out of range of the network, and their beacons can be heard and passed along.

There will always be a need for RELAY stations, there can never be to many. You do not need to be on the air 24 hours a day, though that would be nice. We need as many people as possible to understand APRS and be able to bring their RELAY station up when the need arises. If you have the interest and gear available, and would like to be on our standby list for emergencies and special event coverage, please contact me or the SEWI APRS Group.

ANY TNC can be used as a RELAY station, simply set the ALIAS command to "RELAY". There are many other parameters that may be available to you in your particular TNC for APRS use. Please read your TNC's manual.

Please see the "HOME RELAY" column in the general programming table.
