Base Satellite Operations

Wisconsin/Michigan Portable Satellite Operation Aug. 2000

Opperating the "Sats" from home in a dry shack with a cup of coffee is hard enough...

So why not try it "portable" with a hand held antenna and a HT?

My Wife Jeananne N9VSV and I reciently took a small vacation to the Upper Pensilua of Michigan, and then across Northern Wisconsin.

Our gear package was an Arrow dual band antenna used handheld, on an old photography tripod, and a Yeasu 736 and a Yeasu 530 HT. Heil Headsets were used, and all passes were recorded on audio cassette for later review of the QSO's. I wired a 12 volt port into the truck of the car, and we ran most of the passes off the trunk lid parked at some convenient spot along the road. We did overnight at a few resorts and operated from the parking lot, and did one pass from the beach at my cousin's cabin with literally one foot in Papoose lake (trying to avoid the trees). One of the most picturesque spots was The Smith Rapids Covered Bridge in the Chequamegon National Forest, it is an old time wooden covered bridge spanning about 100' over a small river.

Tracking was done via a Garmin GPSIII for knowing our exact location and the correct time, and PocketSat V2.0 running on a PalmIII handheld computer.

Our results were very good. In 4 days we operated from 7 grid squares, and made 54 QSO's to 26 Grids in 19 states and 2 Canadian provinces. By the end of the run, we were able to go from 65 MPH to operating on UO-14 in under 10 minutes. Jeananne would setup and run the rig, and I pointed the Arrow and talked.

On the map below, the Red dots indicate the places we worked FROM, and the violet boxes show the locations of Grid Squares we worked INTO.
