Grass and Ice Drag Race Season

We’ve just completed a very successful 4th year of Grass and Ice drag racing. We competed in over 15 race events in the 2003/2004 season – with more top finishes than any previous year.

The 2003 grass season began when we received our new 2004 Polaris ProX 700 from G&G Powersports and Polaris in June 2003. We also raced our 2002 Polaris 600 XCSP and Polaris 500 Improver. We spent over a month getting the 700 clutching dialed in with some early season Track Dyno tuning with Reichard’s Performance Center. We also had the opportunity to try some prototype HammerTime clutch weights from SuperTorquer. We started our Grass Drag season early with SAM in Withee, WI. We finished well, but realized we didn’t have the weights and clutching where we needed to be. That started a series of adjustments during the season, and working with new sponsor TEAM Industries, to find the right clutching combination. We needed to do quite a bit of testing since this was also our first year working with Team roller clutching.

Our fall 2003 season highlights included our finish as High Points Semi-Pro Driver at the NSRA (National Snowmobile Racing Association) Grass Drags in Wausau, WI. This was where we finally got our 2004 ProX 700 clutching to where we wanted – and gave us our third 1St place finish of the season with the 700 ProX. The 2002 Polaris 600 XCSP was still as strong as ever and very competitive - giving us numerous finals appearances. This was also the first season we traveled to Haydays to compete. We didn’t make a final, but advanced to the Sunday quarterfinals in the Stock 700S class.

This past winter we decided to race the JR’s Ice Drag series in central Wisconsin for the first time. We won the seasons Stock 600S, Improved 600, and Improved 500 High Points Titles. We also raced the SnoHawks snow drags in New Berlin, Wisconsin. This is where we started racing and we return every winter. We finished with four 1st, one 2nd and three 3rd place finishes.

We also raced an exhibition grass drag this April/2004 at the Monkey Butt ATV races in Janesville, Wisconsin. The Monkey Butt event draws from through the Midwest and is a great event. It was a great chance to gain some well deserved exposure for our sponsors. Top open class ATV ran against Mike on the 2002 Polaris 600 XCSP. The 600 is still undefeated!! Thanks to the Monkey Butt crew for allowing us to run – we had a great time.

The upcoming season will see several significant changes in our racing program. The first is Mike’s graduation from college last year, and his current full time employment as an Engineer. This will allow more free time on the weekends to attend races. School and previous jobs had created scheduling conflicts in the past. The second is a commitment to significantly increase our early season DYNO tuning time. This will allow us to dial in our clutching setups earlier than previous seasons. We’ve also added a new Polaris 2004 440 ProX Racer to our team - and look forward getting it ready for the 2004 Grass Drag season.

One of the team features that has been very successful is our team web site. We’ve continued to keep a national schedule for Grass Drag events that has been very popular - in addition to team bio information, race results, sponsor information, pictures and related racing links.

The past season would not have been possible without the help of the pit crew. Thank you to Tim Arquette, Jason Carstens, Chad Mayer, Rebecca Mayer, TJ Mayer, Neil Verdegan, and Jeff Warren. In addition we would also like to thank all of our sponsors who helped make this our most successful season ever. They were all extremely helpful and very responsive to our (sometimes short notice) parts and supplies orders.
