JERKINS
SURNAMES: CURTOY/CURTOIS/COURTOY, CORFE, WALFORD, TWEED, DENNY
I am working off an old family tree, no dates and no sources named. I am
not at all sure that they all came from the same area, but know that Frank
DENNY CURTOYS helped compile BDM information for a Lincolnshire microfiche
and that I am following in his footsteps, but coming in through the side
door on another line of the family. I have a copy of a basic family tree
done by him, but unfortunately he neither dated the names,or said where they
came from, and worse, he made no mention of where he got the information.
Suspect CURTOY, CURTOIS, COURTOY are variations of COURTEY and COURTAY which
go back to Doomsday book, and know one branch or more was in Lincs, in various
places, they had estates and were church men. Possible the surname is an
offshoot of COURTHOSE and maybe even CALTHROP, and looks as though the family
had 412 years involvment at Bransdon All Saints Church, Lincs.
CORFE, WALFORD - no idea at all, and no dates to even guess at, perhaps late
1700s - early 1800s.
TWEED maybe Essex, but also maybe Lincs and same for DENNY.The man who did
the tree was the man who combined efforts to compile the BDM fiche for Coleby
Lincs. He must have had a reason but at this stage I can't see what or who
he was following the lead on. His name was Frank CURTOYS, aka Frances DENNY
CURTOYS, who was still alive in 1931, and must be buried someplace (in Lincs
?).

of William EMMERSON was the Richard EMERSON who died in Langton by Partney
in 1717 (and who was probably the Richard christened there in 1663). The
1716 will of Richard EMERSON, which mentions an unnamed beloved wife, makes
provision for his eight children, including a son William (who was christened
in Langton by Partney in November 1710. The name of Richard's wife was Mary
(or, possibly, Marie), and the oldest daughter of Richard was named Mary
(probably born 1695 or 1696). I have not found a record of the marriage of
Richard EMERSON, who probably married about 1691-95. The other six children
of Richard EMERSON were: Rachell, chr. Feb. 1697/8; Penelope, chr. Feb 1699/00;
John, b. Apr 1702; Jane, prob. b. 1704 or 1705; Timothy, chr. Jan 1707; and
Edward, chr. Mar 1712/3. With the possible exception of the oldest child
(Mary), all of Richard's children were christened in Langton by Partney.
My hope is that someone who is a descendant of Richard EMERSON has family
records with a clue to what happened to his son William (b. 1710).

FORTH
SURNAME: FORTH OR FIRTH
I am searching for my ancestors of FIRTH or FORTH from Newton on Trent. My
searching is for a Thomas FORTH dob 18 Aug 1827 born at Newton on Trent in
Lincolnshire. There are no birth or marriage records existing here to support
me, on family information. My first difficult is in establishing the correct
family name. The only reference I could find in the IGI search was under
the surname of FIRTH. A Bible, alleging to be the family Bible has FORTH
as the spelling of the family name. Thomas FIRTH married Elizabeth TAYLOR
( born 1834) on 26 Jan 1853 at Newton on Trent. They sailed to South Australia
on the ship 'HYDERBAD'. The shipping records showed their name as Thomas
and Elizabeth FIRTH. There was an alteration made to the shipping register
by their daughter and changed the family name to FORTH. IGI records show
the following family: William FIRTH ( or FORTH), married a Sarah (nee unknown).
Children: Sarah, b. 27 Jan 1822; Suzan, b. 10 Oct 1824; Thomas, b. 12 Aug
1827; Ann, b. 04 Feb 1829; George, b. 01 Feb 1835. Are there any FIRTH
or FORTH families now living in Newton on Trent? Is there a coat of arms
for FORTH?

METTEM
SURNAME: METTEM/METTAM
I'm a genealogical beginner, researching METTEM/AM. I've got back to my great
great grandfather William METTEM (Also written METTAM in Muster Rolls - according
to Quarter concerned.). He enlisted in army in England 1846, and went to
Wales, Scotland, India etc - Indian Mutiny Medal. Left for India from
Edinburgh/Perth, Married in Glasgow - Gorbals - 1853 - Ellen McConvile. Died
in action 1858. I'm working on next link back from him at the moment. I'm
probably going to have to go thro lots of 1841 census returns, but I think
I know where he may have been in Barracks - Portsmouth or Cardigan. There
are almost certainly Lincs., Derbyshire & Notts. forebears. LDS/IGI shows
some METTEM distinct, but I don't know how significant spelling is. Any
suggestions/help much appreciated. A John Mettem, married Mary Horton, Lincoln
(City) 3 May 1745. But note relationship of this person to my kin not yet
established, however consider rarity of surname, especially with this spelling.
Mettem/am "nests" occur in Lincs, Derbyshire, Notts and Yorks, all contiguous
counties.
