Prospective Candidates

Junior who have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher by the end of the first semester of their junior year will receive a letter inviting them to become members of NHS. Interested candidates must complete a form and attend an informational meeting to be considered. Candidates who do not return the completed form or attend the meeting will lose their opportunity to become a member of NHS.

Junior Service Project

The junior service project must be completed before you can officially become a member of NHS. For the junior project you must select 2 different community service activities to participate in. Activities must be approved by the NHS advisor in advance, you must spend at least 5 hours in each of the two activities, and the appropriate form must be completed at the end of each activity.

Summer Service Project

The summer service project must be completed to maintain your status as a member of NHS, and to allow you to use NHS on any college applications or scholarship forms. For the summer project you must select 2 different community service activities to participate in. The activities should be different than the two from your junior project. Activities must be approved by the NHS advisor in advance, you must spend at least 5 hours in each of the two activities, and the appropriate form must be completed at the end of each activity.

Senior Service Project

The senior service project must be completed to maintain your status as a member of NHS, and to allow you to use NHS on any college applications or scholarship forms. For the senior project you must select a major community service activity to participate in for a total of 20 hours. It can be the same as one of the previous projects that you've participated in, or it can be a new activity, but it must be approved by the NHS advisor in advance. You will also be making a presentation at the NHS ceremony in which you briefly discuss your senior project.

NHS Ceremony

The NHS ceremony is held to recognize the accomplishments of the senior members of NHS and to welcome the junior members who have completed their junior project. The ceremony will be held in the SHS Auditorium, and all senior and junior members are expected to attend. Relatives and friends of all NHS members are welcome, and there will be a short social in the lobby afterwards.

All members are expected to dress appropriately (no jeans, shorts, t-shirts or tank-tops are allowed).

Junior members will be walking up on stage and will receive a membership card from Mr. Kenney.

Senior members will be walking up on stage, giving a 10-15 second description of their senior project, and receiving a certificate from Mr. Kenney.

There will also be 4 senior members speaking of the pillars of NHS (scholarship, leadership, character, and service) for approximately 3-5 minutes each.

A few refreshments will be served in the lobby after the ceremony.

Location: SHS Auditorium

Students should arrive by 6:45 to be seated. Seniors will sit in the front-left section, and juniors will sit in the front-right section when facing the stage. Parents may sit anywhere in the center section of the auditorium.
