British Barque "Gleaner"

arrived at New York on 5 July 1842, 33 days from Campbeltown, Scotland.

"Arrived since our last."
"Br barque Gleaner, Gale, 33 ds fm Campbeltown, Scotland, with 260 tons coal, bound St Johns. Put in here to land passengers. 107 steerage passengers."
(Note: Underlined words in document were hand written on form to fill in the blanks.) This passenger list has columns headed by; " Names, Age, Sex, Occupation, The Country to which they severally belong, The Country to which they intend to become inhabitants, Died on the voyage." All passengers were shown as intending to inhabit the United States. None were listed as having died on board. Therefore only the first five columns are shown below.

"The British bark "Gleaner", Thomas Gale, master, arrived at New York on 5 July 1842, 30 days from Campbelltown, Scotland. The passenger manifest, dated the following day, is available in National Archives Microfilm Publication M237, Roll 49, No. 604; you can borrow a copy of this microfilm through AGLL, any LDS (Mormon) Family History Center, or Interlibrary Loan. _Lloyd's Register_ for the 1840's and 1850's lists several barks named "Gleaner", none of them, however, captained by a Thomas Gale. It is possible, however, that Gale was not the captain, but merely the (first) mate, commanding the vessel on this voyage while the captain took a vacation ashore (a common practice in the age of sail). It will help greatly in identifying this particular bark "Gleaner" to know its tonnage. This is usually recorded on the passenger manifest, so when you check the National Archives microfilm listed above please note the tonnage and post it to the list, and I will check _Lloyd's Register_ for a bark "Gleaner" of the appropriate tonnage." Gale do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York, contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all Passengers received on board the Br. Barque Gleaner whereof I am Master, from Campbeltown. So help me God. Thos. Gale swear to this 6th July 1842 before me, (sp.?).

Several names were difficult to interpret and, in general, are marked with a "?", if you can help me clarify these I will appreciate it.

Hello,
I came across the passenger list of the barque "Gleaner" that you've posted on the web. I regularly search for references to the surname McSparron and it's variants and found a Neil McSporan listed. He is likely to be the Niell McSporran baptised at Killean & Kilchenzie in 1816. I have a record of his death in 1857 at Campbeltown, in which he is recorded as a mercantile seaman, so it's likely he returned from America.
Although many of the other surnames are familiar to me, I cannot however make any other McSporran connections. A quick search of the IGI (at www.familysearch.org) for the other couples who are listed shows Niel McKay married Mizie Montgomerey in 1806 at Southend, David Andrew married Janet Huie in Southend in 1824, Neil Taylor married Margaret McMillan at Campbeltown 1834 and Archibald McNair married Mary Mitchell 1825 Campbeltown (though he appears to be a widower by 1842).
I expect you're aware that Elizabeth Ferguson seems to have married both William Ralston in Campbeltown and Alexander Ralston in Southend on the same day, 20th Dec 1824. Most odd.
Mary Agnes Smith was baptised in Southend on 6 June 1842, so she could not have been on the ship unless it departed on the 7th or later. Thus the claim of a 33 day voyage seems exaggerated.
