Catlin
Researching my great-great-grandfather, Colonel Hooker CATLIN. He appears on the 1850 Wisconsin census for Berlin, then Marquette County, as "Huker Catlin", at the age of 12 in the home of John and Agnes KING. We do not know if they were related, but it is possible "Huker" Catlin was serving an apprenticeship since he became a blacksmith and John King was a blacksmith. The name Colonel was given to him at birth and was not a military rank. He later served as a private in the 1st Nebraska Cavalry during the Civil War. C.H. CATLIN was born in 1838 in Washington County, New York to Jasper J. CATLIN and Joanna AYRES Catlin. We do not know when or with whom he relocated to Wisconsin. We do not know what happened to his parents. Therefore, I am trying to find out everything I can about the CATLINS then residing in Wisconsin, preferably as close to Berlin, Wisconsin as possible. I would appreciate the opportunity to share information with other CATLIN/AYRES researchers interested in Wisconsin. C.H. CATLIN later married in Iowa and visited Wisconsin, but appears to have resided in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa for the remainder of his lifetime. Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide, from Jerelyn Leinweber. (12/97)
