M  9 7  i n  U r s a  M a j o r

M-97, or the Owl Nebula is at lower right. At upper left is NGC 3556. They can be found under the bowl part of Ursa Major. M-97, though listed as 9th magnitude, can be difficult to see under skies that are light-polluted or hazy. M-97 is a planetary nebula. NGC 3556 is a distant galaxy.

Equipment: Nikkor 800mm f 5.6 lens on a Losmandy G-11 mount,

ST-4 autoguider on a Meade ETX90.

Exposure: Combination of three exposures: 30 minutes with Kodak Royal Gold 400, 50 minutes with Kodak E200, and three minutes with Kodak E200. That short exposure was a mistake, aborted when I thought the autoguider had lost the guide star. Nevertheless, in three minutes, both the Owl nebula and NGC 3556 were recorded on the film.

Location: A light polluted back yard in suburban Milwaukee.
