Astrophotography with a Nikon D100

M-51, shot on Jan. 20, 2004 using a Nikon D100 and an 10-inch Newtonian at prime focus on a Losmandy G-11 mount.

Settings: ISO 800, daylight color balance, TIFF file at highest resolution for a 17.2 megabyte original file size.

It is a combination of four exposures averaging 145 seconds, using noise reduction and a Hutech LPS filter. I combined the images using the layering tool in Photoshop. Each layer was set at 50 percent transparency, using the Normal layering mode. The Multiply function also seems to give good results. Each layer was merged, or flattened before adding the additional layer. For the final step, I changed the Mode to gray scale.

It was taken at a light-polluted location in suburban Milwaukee. Temperature was about 0 degrees F. and transparency was about 5 out of 10. Seeing was poor.
