M51, the Whirlpool Nebula, was taken with an eight-inch Newtonian at prime focus using Kodak E200 slide film. It was shot from my light-polluted back yard on March 8, 2004 in suburban Milwaukee. It is a combination of two 45-minute exposures using an IDAS light pollution filter. The images were layered in Photoshop and converted to grey scale. I used a Lumicon off axis guider and an SBIG ST-4 for tracking. Compare this to M-51  shot with a Nikon D100 digital camera.
